WHAT IS A FREELANCER

A freelance business is a great business model that allows you to get started with virtually no overheads that you can start almost immediately with a bit of time and passion. So many people think freelancing is just for creative professionals but I have learned that the business model is so much more. I define freelancing as:

“A business started by an individual that markets a service.”

This means that freelancers have a unique set of circumstances as they grow their business to ensure they stay on track to reach their goals.

The common problems faced by freelancers all over the world:

• Not charging for what your service is worth
• Getting stuck in a discounting price war
• Not focusing on the right market or clients
• No focusing on the right things or too many things at once and limit business growth
• Having a service offering that is too broad

TYPES OF FREELANCERS

There are several types of freelancers in the freelance community with each group having different expectations and goals for their business. Freelancing is a great option for most people looking for that extra freedom and escape from the traditional 9-5 environment.

FREELANCER #1 - SIDE-PROJECT FREELANCERS

These freelancers have a part-time or full-time job and use freelancing to supplement their income after their day job. Side project freelancers are often in the phase of starting their freelance businesses and hope to turn it into a full-time freelance lifestyle.

FREELANCER #2 - FULL-TIME FREELANCERS

Full-time freelancers are those that work as a freelancer completing different project for a number of clients. Full-time freelancers often work from home or from shared office spaces and charge an hourly or project rate for their time.

FREELANCER #3 - SINGLE CONTRACT FREELANCERS

These freelancers generally work for one client at a time for a fix term contract. This is a great way to go if you want to work certain months of the year and have set breaks. This type of freelancing can be difficult because you generally only have one income source (or client) at a time which can make it difficult to manage you cash flow over the year.

FREELANCER #4 - FREELANCE BUSINESS OWNERS

Freelance business owners are those people who I believe have leveraged the opportunities presented to freelancers for business growth. Although they still undertake some traditional freelance project they have found ways to create more passive streams of income in their business.

Becoming a freelance business owner should be the main goal for all freelancers.
